Developer Experience Engineer
About the Role
We're looking for a Developer Experience Engineer to embed directly in the San Francisco developer ecosystem and help shape the future of Git workflows.
This is a hybrid role across engineering, product, and community - part builder, part listener, part connector.
About the Job
Join us to help build the next generation of version control tools alongside a GitHub co-founder.
You'll spend time with developers, teams, and partners - understanding how they actually work, where current tools break down, and where GitButler can win. You'll translate those insights into product direction, surface opportunities, and help coordinate high-leverage conversations between external partners and our team.
You'll also get your hands dirty: prototyping workflows, testing ideas, contributing code when useful, and helping validate new concepts in the wild.
What You'll Do
- Engage deeply with developers, teams, and partners in SF
- Identify pain points, workflows, and emerging patterns in modern development
- Turn real-world insights into clear product direction and priorities
- Build relationships and trust across the developer ecosystem
- Help coordinate key conversations, partnerships, and introductions
- Pull in the CEO or team at the right moments for maximum impact
- Prototype, experiment, and validate ideas quickly (code when helpful)
About You
- Strong technical background (you can build, debug, and reason about real systems)
- Deep familiarity with Git and modern developer workflows
- Comfortable talking to developers and presenting in front of crowds. You love to do a demo.
- Curious, observant, and opinionated about how software should be built
- Able to translate messy qualitative input into clear insights
- Excited by ambiguity, autonomy, and early-stage product shaping
- Based in SF
Bonus Points
- Experience in forward deployed engineering or early-stage product roles
- Strong network in the SF developer or startup ecosystem
- Experience with developer tools, version control, or collaboration systems
- History of building side projects, tools, or open source
